“We drew and designed all of the male costumes and…worked with [Brooks Brothers] to develop the samples. They were sort of our manufacturing arm and also provided a lot of the background archival research,” Martin told EW earlier this year. “And, very interestingly, one of the other reasons we decided to partner with [them] was that Fitzgerald had been one of their very loyal customers. He mentions Brooks Brothers numerous times in his writing and it’s usually to describe the sort of quintessentially well dressed upper class American man.”

Brooks Brothers has just revealed a new “Great Gatsby” collection based on the costumes in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming film adaptation.

The brand is quick to point out that F. Scott Fitzgerald was a lifelong Brooks Brothers customer, and so the clothier’s partnership with the filmmakers was ideal.

“Brooks Brothers is mentioned several times in Fitzgerald’s writing as a representation of the ultimate gentleman’s purveyor of fine clothing to the American man of distinction,” Catherine Martin, the Academy Award-winning costume designer for the film, says on the company’s website.

Many of the film’s costumes were inspired by 1920s images or products in the company’s archives, and Brooks Brothers even manufactured more than 500 outfits for the film.

The new retail collection was adapted from those dapper costumes.

GREAT GATSBY 2

Brooks Brothers has released a limited-edition menswear collection based on suiting created for Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, and more of the male actors in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby. But unlike most fashion lines “inspired by” movie franchises — after you saw Spring Breakers, did you run out and buy a Spring Breakers bikini? — this one actually makes sense.

Gatsby author F. Scott Fitzgerald was himself a lifelong devotee of the American clothier. The author reported for military duty in a Brooks Brothers-tailored uniform, which he was also wearing when he met his future wife. “He smelled like new goods. Being close to him, my face in the space between his ear and his stiff army collar was like being initiated into the subterranean reserves of a fine fabric store,” Zelda is said to have remembered.

Gatsby wardrobe designer Catherine Martin combed through the Brooks Brothers archives before creating 500 period costumes for the male characters in the film.

The Gatsby Collection — which includes tailored suits, tuxedos, and separates like sport coats and trousers, as well as ties, suspenders, shoes, and other accessories — went on sale Monday in over 150 Brooks Brothers stores around the world. Costumes from the film are on exhibit in the brand’s outposts in New York City, London, Tokyo and Milan.
