Amazon has rolled out a new perk for Prime members: cheaper healthcare.

The company has announced that customers who pay for Amazon Prime will now be able to get $100 off access to its One Medical healthcare service. Membership of One Medical, which usually costs $199 annually, will be available to Prime members for $99 a year.

Insider reported in September that Amazon was considering the move. The new benefits, which started on Wednesday, allow Prime members to access 24/7 virtual care with One Medical.

Amazon said members will also be able to book same and next-day in-person appointments, provided they live near one of its primary care offices. These are located in 24 different parts of the US; some cities have multiple locations.

It’s the latest sign that Amazon is ramping up its push into healthcare. The ecommerce giant released a subscription program earlier this year allowing Prime members to get generic prescriptions delivered to their doorstep, and bought One Medical for $3.9 billion in 2022, one of its biggest acquisitions of all time.

Healthcare has been an area of significant focus for the company as it looks to expand beyond its traditional areas of dominance, with CEO Andy Jassy saying Amazon had the potential to be a “significant disruptor” of the industry in a 2022 all-hands meeting.

However, the tech titan has seen a few setbacks in its efforts to break into the healthcare sector.

In 2022, it shut down Amazon Care, its urgent and primary care provider, with employees telling Insider that the program suffered from a confused approach and a lack of customer demand.

Amazon’s purchase of One Medical has also caused angst among privacy advocates, who have raised concerns about the company’s access to medical information.

Amazon has said it will never share customers’ health information outside of One Medical or use it for other purposes without their permission.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider, made outside normal working hours.
